- There is no quick fix.
You don’t need a quick fix. What you need is focus and structure. If your career had a Fast Forward button, you’d have pressed it by now. Opt for structure and focus instead.
So here are five structured steps to get you started:
DEFINE YOURSELF AND YOUR OFFERINGS:
Reflect on your career, articulate your achievements, lessons learned, preferences, and strengths. This forms your value proposition.
SET CLEAR CAREER GOALS:
Where do you aspire to be? What are your expectations for your next job? Which industries and functions do you fancy? What’s your global career outlook? Align your career with your life priorities. Envision your long-term career aspirations.
CHART YOUR JOURNEY AND PROGRESS PLAN:
How do you reach your goals? Can you get there directly, or do you need to take intermediate steps? Identify the necessary information, skills, and relationships. Develop a project plan with practical milestones, track progress, measure results, and adjust as needed.
BOOST YOUR VISIBILITY:
A huge proportion of management and executive opportunities are not publicly advertised. Instead of chasing the few visible positions, ensure that recruiters can spot you for the hidden opportunities. Leverage relationships, enhance your LinkedIn presence, contribute articles, posts, and fine-tune your CV.
DON’T DO IT ALONE:
Career development and job searching demand reflection, inspiration, and support. Rely on trusted advisors, former colleagues, university alumni, and mentors in your network. Assist others on their career journey. You gain valuable insights and a sense of fulfillment. Remember, you can always seek professional guidance if you’re struggling.
Your career significantly influences your happiness, financial security, and self-confidence.
Invest in it.
